English: Backstory

 Activity: Read the first chapter of Moby Dick out loud. Notice how Melville uses different paragraphs to describe Ishmael's ideas about sailors, America, why he enjoys sailing, and how he came to board a boat. What does chapter say about who Ishmael is and what he believes?

Worksheet: please fill out the following Backstory, and then write a 500 word backstory to explain as many details as you can. Why are these details important to your character?

Bible: Asking God for Strength

 Prayer Journal: Write a 5-7 sentence prayer about asking for strength from God, as well ass patience, kindness, compassion, and a sense of humor. [1 Corinthians 4:9-13]

Activity: Write an encouraging letter to Mr. Qin. Encourage him to stay strong during his tribulations. Use 2-3 Bible verses, some encouraging words, and illustrate your letter.

English: Phrases and Clauses

 Quiz: Answer the following questions -

    1. Does a phrase contain a subject that acts through a verb?
    2. What is missing from a sentence with a dangling modifier?
    3. Is "but" a coordinating or a subordinating conjunction?
    4. Rewrite this sentence so the modifier is clear: "Before they melted the kids decorated the snowmen."
    5. Can a dependent clause work as its own sentence?
    6. State all the coordinating conjunctions.
    7. How many independent clauses does a simple sentence have?
    8. What type of sentence has a dependent clause -- a compound sentence or a complex sentence?
    9. What must any clause contain?
    10. Which of these is NOT a kind of clause? Adverb clause, verb clause, noun clause, adjective clause

Other work: please continue your character sketches. This time, start sketching out your antagonist and the protagonist's helper, using the same form from Monday's class.

Bible: Starting your Bible Journal

Prayer Journal: Write a 5-7 sentence prayer about God becoming the most important thing in your life.

Bible Journal: Create a cover for your Bible Journal (you can draw a picture; be creative), and then on the second page of your Bible Journal, write down 10 observations from Daniel 2. 

An observation can be:

    *something you want to know more about

    *something that confused you

    *questions you have about something you read

    *cool things you noticed

    *not-so cool things you noticed

    *something you want to remember for later

You can also draw, color, paste pictures of magazines, in your journal if you want. Be colorful and creative!

English: Introducing Typing Stories

Typing Task: take twenty minutes and type out a portion of a book. We will continue to work on typing the book this semester, to improve typing speed, vocabulary, and understanding of how a story is written.

Homework: study chapter 1: Phrases and Clauses and prepare for Quiz on Wednesday.
